Clayton State's Dean of Libraries Recognized for Leadership and Service

(March 17, 2025) - Dr. Sonya Gaither has been a dedicated member of the University System of Georgia since January 1995, when she began her professional career at Georgia Southern University.

After nearly two decades of service, she transitioned to the role of Director of Library Services at Gordon State College. On March 1, 2019, Dr. Gaither became the Dean of Libraries at Clayton State University, joining the Laker Nation. Throughout her career, Dr. Gaither has held various leadership positions in the higher education and academic library fields, contributing at the local, state, and regional levels.

Dr. Gaither’s commitment to the profession has been recognized with numerous honors. Most recently, during the Education 2.0 Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, held from March 4-6, 2025, she was awarded the Excellence in Education award in recognition of her 30-year career in higher education and academic librarianship. The Education 2.0 Conference is known for providing an enriching experience for those advancing innovation in education (source: Education 2.0 website). Dr. Gaither was also honored with the Outstanding Leadership Award at the Education 2.0 Conference in March 2024, where she was among 50 distinguished awardees. In June 2024, Dr. Gaither was recognized at the HEaL Conferences in Las Vegas, where she participated in two panel discussions and a fireside chat. Additionally, Dr. Gaither was informed on March 6, 2025, by LaGrange College’s Vice President of Advancement, Rebeca Roth Nicks, and Director of Alumni and Community Relations, Martha Pirkle, that she will receive the prestigious 2025 Distinguished Service Alumni Award during the college’s May 2025 graduation ceremony. This award honors alumni who have shown exceptional leadership and dedication to LaGrange College and its mission. Dr. Gaither has served on the LaGrange College Board of Trustees and held several leadership positions on the President's Leadership Council, including Secretary, Vice President, and President, among other service commitments.
